The River and the Walls

The first in my 'Visions of Hell' series. This one shows the bank of the river Styx rising up to the walls of the city of Dis. In the river you can see the skeletal arms of the sullen and wrathful reaching out and the bubbles caused by the breath of those trapped at the bottom.

The lines around the edges translate to the following (reading clockwise)

This melancholy stream decends, and makes
Beyond the foot of that accursed slope
Its way into a swamp known as the Styx

Beneath the surface many people sigh
With lots of little bubbles rising up
As you can see, wherever you cast your eyes

We came at last to the foot of a lofty tower
